Sports roundup: Lynden girls tennis claims second-ever league title

WWU rowing secures two gold medals

By Connor J. Benintendi Staff Reporter

The postseason has arrived for select spring sports, while others wrap up their regular seasons over the next week. In the meantime, league titles are still being decided.

Western Washington University’s women’s rowing team added another highlight to its season with a strong showing at the WIRA Championships.

Here’s an overview of what you may have missed from the last week of the spring season.

With just over a week remaining in the regular season, Sedro-Woolley (15-1, 12-0 NWC) is pulling away as the favorite to win the Northwest Conference title.

But the league has become increasingly top-heavy. Five teams have nine league wins, including three from Whatcom County: Lynden (13-4, 9-2 NWC), Blaine (11-4, 9-2 NWC) and Mount Baker (15-3, 9-3 NWC).

Blaine and Mount Baker clashed on Tuesday, April 30, and the latter emerged with a 7-4 victory. That snapped a six-game win streak for the Borderites and gave the Mountaineers their second straight win.

Lynden has won three in a row, most recently defeating Mount Vernon 13-7. The Lions have recovered from a midseason skid in which they lost four of six games from April 9–20.

Lynden Christian (10-7, 6-6 NWC) is at the top of the league’s middle tier, and the Lyncs should be in position to be the No. 2 seed behind Mount Baker in the upcoming 1A District 1 tournament. LC has won two straight games, last beating Oak Harbor 12-5 on April 30.

Ferndale (8-7, 6-6 NWC) has also won two in a row, and the Golden Eagles edged Mount Vernon 9-6 on Monday, April 29.

Boys soccer

Sehome (13-0-1, 9-0-1 NWC) concluded its undefeated regular season on Saturday, April 27 by beating Burlington-Edison 2-1. The Mariners secured the NWC title and are the top seed in the 2A District 1 tournament that begins Thursday, May 2.

Squalicum (10-5-0, 8-2-0 NWC) barely earned the No. 2 seed over Bellingham (11-3-1, 7-2-1 NWC) by a half-game, even though the Bayhawks defeated the Storm, 2-1, in both teams’ final regular season game on Saturday, April 27.

Regardless of seeding, all three Bellingham teams will have home games to begin the district tournament.

In Class 1A, Lynden Christian (9-4-2, 6-0-1 NWC) locked down the top 1A District 1 seed after going 9-0-2 over its final 11 games. The Lyncs last beat Nooksack Valley (3-12-1, 1-5-1 NWC) on April 29.

Meridian (10-4-1, 6-2-0 NWC) will be the No. 2 seed while Blaine (8-5-2, 3-4-1 NWC) will be the third seed. District games begin Thursday, May 2.

Girls tennis

Lynden girls tennis secured its second NWC title in program history — both of which have come in the last three seasons.

The Lions took down Bellingham, 4-3, on April 29 before sweeping Anacortes on April 30. If Lynden defeats Lakewood on Wednesday, May 1, the team will also secure its first-ever undefeated season at 15-0. Lynden’s 79-12 court record is also the best of all NWC schools.

Sehome (10-1) is currently in second place, with Bellingham (9-3) and Squalicum (9-3) close behind.

WWU

Women’s rowing

Western women’s rowing secured two gold medals at the 2024 WIRA Championships April 27–28 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.

The Vikings’ Varsity 8+ (6:52.864) and second Varsity 8+ (7:21.045) crews earned top placements in their six-team grand final races on Sunday.

Western’s Varsity 4+ crew finished fourth in the grand final (8:03.854), just over two seconds behind third-place University of Puget Sound. Next up for Western is the Opening Day Regatta on Saturday, May 4, on Montlake Cut in Seattle. That will be the team’s final regatta prior to the GNAC Championships on Saturday, May 18, also on Lake Natoma.
