When Jovi Jensen tried out for golf as a sophomore, she did not know what to expect besides having something to look forward to in the spring. In the fall, Jensen had been a defender for the soccer team and did cheerleading in the winter.
“I enjoy how much I have progressed in two years,” Jensen said of golf. “I had no idea how to play. I didn’t know how the scoring worked or anything and just came for a fun time.”
Jensen, who is now a senior, is one of the top golfers in Whatcom County this season. When she first joined the Meridian girls golf team, she learned golf was a mentally challenging sport.
“It was tough being able to calm myself down in big shot moments,” Jensen said. “It helped me become more patient with myself, give myself more grace and take it hole by hole, and not think too much in the future.”
Last season, Jensen showed major signs of improvement as a junior, finishing 13th at the 1A Bi-District girls tournament and 28th at the 1A state tournament.
“It is really cool,” Jensen said. “It was a little bit of luck but I have put a lot of hard work into it. I stay after practice and come on the weekends. We also have a really good time with no pressure or stress. Our coach is very dedicated.”
As Jensen enters her final season, she hopes to win districts and return to the state tournament. Once she graduates, she wants to focus on business and marketing while continuing to play golf with her friends.
