Anacortes — Anthony Idczak died suddenly from a heart attack in late February while building a wheelchair ramp for a friend. His final act, like his many other selfless acts, came from Tony’s guiding principle: that helping othersis humanity’s highest and best use. Tony’s life was one of building, planting, and creating. For a time he ran his own successful business, Acme Landscape Service. As the horticulturist and later the Maintenance and Construction Supervisor at Whatcom County Parks and Recreation, he helped build park structures, planted hundreds of trees, reduced the use of pesticides, and helped protect his fellow employees’ union health insurance.
Tony and his soulmate, Joanna, built a house in Whatcom County. They delighted in raising their two children amidst a large garden, an orchard, fresh air, and pure water. Of all the things that Tony created in his life, he was most proud of his family, as they are of him. Tony and Joanna later moved to Anacortes, to a house with a view of the sea like they had as newly weds in Bellingham. In retirement, Tony spent his time helping friends and family with projects large and small, writing stories and songs, playing the guitar, volunteering, and living the good life with Joanna.
Tony was an unwavering friend, mentor, and champion for his talented crew, his friends, and his family. He was known for his generosity; he took great pleasure and pride in sharing his time, effort, and skills. He was a warm and outgoing person, ready with a handshake, a smile, or an incredible story from his life. His talent for kind words and genuine appreciation made those in his life feel seen and celebrated.
Tony is survived by his wife Joanna; son Nathan and daughter-in-law Jenny; daughter Sarah, son-in-law Brandon, and newborn grandson Gabriel; and hisbrothers, Tom, Mike, and Jonah. He is preceded in death by his younger brother, David. In lieu off lowers, donations in Tony’s honor may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation.
