Jesse Stanton's weekly picks and other live shows in Whatcom and Skagit counties

JESSE’S PICKS

Jazz Explosion
6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, FireHouse Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave.

Jazz drummer Jerry Steinhilber plays out most often with a minimal trio of drums, bass and sax. For the end of the Jazz Center of Bellingham’s season, he’s going big with his group the Jazz Explosion, which adds trumpet, piano and percussion to the mix for a tribute to the music of Blue Note Records. That’s at the FireHouse on Wednesday, June 19.

Matney Cook
7–9 p.m. Thursday, June 20, The Admiralty Lounge, 100 N. Commercial St.

Matney Cook is the singer and songwriter behind Nobody’s Peach and the Mudflat Walkers. Her show at The Admiralty Lounge on Thursday, June 20 gives you a chance to see her solo work in a quieter setting. It’s country and Americana with just a hint of jazz phrasing.

LowDown Brass Band
9 p.m. Friday, June 21, Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

Chicago’s LowDown Brass Band takes the classic New Orleans second-line sound and injects a healthy dose of hip-hop and funk rhythms. Expect a nonstop brass and drum dance experience when their tour makes a stop at the Wild Buffalo on Friday, June 21.

Nurhachi
8 p.m. Saturday, June 22, Conway Muse, 18444 Spruce St.

Nurhachi are a new original rock group from the Skagit Valley but they have some familiar members, including Jack Mattingly, the former lead singer of Whiskey Fever. They’ve got a show at the Conway Muse on Saturday, June 22 with a couple other leading lights of the rootsy side of the Skagit rock scene, Lazy Acres and Pretty Much Nothing.
