Jesse Stanton's weekly picks and other live shows in Whatcom and Skagit counties

By Jesse Stanton CDN Contributor

JESSE’S PICKS

Marty O’Reilly
7–9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, New Prospect Theatre, 207 Prospect St.

Singer-songwriter Marty O’Reilly works at the intersection of blues, folk and Americana, with a rough-hewn but beautiful voice and strong original songs. He’ll be at the New Prospect Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 10 with a trio.

JT & the Blue Impressions with the House Kat Band
8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, Boundary Bay Brewery, 1107 Railroad Ave.

Jan Peters is a key player in the local blues, jazz and Celtic music scenes, booking shows, playing all kinds of instruments and making connections. One thing he hasn’t done much of in recent years is to front a band of his own in a blues/jazz vein. On Thursday, Sept. 12, he’s going to change that with the debut of his new project, JT & the Blue Impressions, at Boundary Bay. Openers House Kat are a promising young jazz group led by singer Sage Eisenhour, who will also be sitting in with the headliners.

Peelander-Z
9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

Austin’s Peelander-Z are a “Japanese Action Comic Punk Band.” They’ve been around for over 20 years now in various lineups, touring the world in brightly colored suits, and bringing enthusiastically off-kilter punk melodies wherever they go. They’re at The Shakedown on Friday, Sept. 13.

Make.Shift Open Mic
5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, Make.Shift, 306 Flora St.

Make.Shift’s open mic, which takes place the second Saturday of every month, is always for all ages, because that’s what that organization is all about. But sometimes the youth need a little extra encouragement or space of their own. This month’s edition on Saturday, Sept. 14 features a youth open mic from 5–7:30 p.m., before the regular open mic goes until 9:30 p.m.
