Rebecca Pederson became a firefighter with the Bellingham Fire Department about three years ago after a 13-year teaching career. Pederson found the job change "checked boxes she didn't know existed," and she's made close connections with her fellow firefighters. During their 24-hour shifts, they often make meals together, play pickleball and cards, and sit around a campfire in between calls. (Hailey Hoffman/Cascadia Daily News)
