The baseball and boys soccer regular seasons are nearing a close, while softball pushes into the final stretch. Some league champions have already been crowned.

Western Washington University men’s golf earned another Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship, while the women’s team took second.

Here’s an overview of what you may have missed from the last week of the spring season.

Baseball

Mount Vernon (17-2, 13-0 Northwest Conference) has clinched the league title. No other team in the NWC has less than three league losses.

In the final week of the season, Lynden (14-4), Sedro-Woolley (13-5) and Oak Harbor (14-3) are all battling for second place, as they each have a 10-3 record in NWC ballgames.

The middle of the conference remains tight, with eight of the 16 teams possessing five to seven league victories. Among those teams are six Whatcom County teams all battling for higher postseason positioning.

Meridian (12-6, 7-6 NWC) and Lynden Christian (10-7, 7-6 NWC) are neck and neck in a battle for the top seed out of 1A District 1, and each have two games remaining. LC dropped its last game, 8-3, to league champion Mount Vernon on Tuesday, April 23, while Meridian edged Ferndale, 9-8, the same day.

Nooksack Valley (8-9, 6-7 NWC) is also in the mix, but the Pioneers will have to hope Meridian and LC lose one or two of their final games. NV’s last game was a 10-3 loss to Oak Harbor on April 23.

Fastpitch softball

Blaine (10-3, 8-1 NWC), Mount Baker (13-2, 7-2 NWC) and Lynden (11-4, 7-2 NWC) are by far Whatcom County’s top teams currently, but Sedro-Woolley remains undefeated in league contests and is in first place in the conference standings.

Mount Baker suffered an upset loss to Lakewood (8-4, 6-3 NWC) on Friday, April 19, snapping the Mountaineers’ eight-game win streak. They bounced back, however, to beat Bellingham 22-0 on Monday, April 22.

Blaine’s only league loss came against Sedro-Woolley on April 15, but the Borderites have since won five in a row.

Lynden once led the league, but the Lions have fallen in three of their last five games. They got back on track on April 22 in a 12-1 win over Sehome.

Boys soccer

Sehome (12-0-1, 8-0-1 NWC) finally met its match, literally. The NWC-leading Mariners tied with Mount Vernon, 1-1, on Friday, April 19 — breaking Sehome’s streak of 13 straight victories.

The Mariners remain the league’s first-place team but with a slight blemish on their record.

Squalicum (9-4-0, 7-1-0 NWC) and Bellingham (10-3-0, 6-2-0 NWC) are in second and third, respectively. The former has split its last two games, most recently falling to Sehome on April 22.

Bellingham has won its last two games and the Bayhawks last beat Lynden, 3-2, on April 23. Squalicum and Bellingham will play each other in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, April 27.

In Class 1A, Lynden Christian (7-4-2, 5-0-1 NWC) has nabbed the top spot, holding a slight edge over Meridian (9-3-1, 5-1-0 NWC). LC has won or tied each of its last nine games.

Blaine (7-4-2, 2-3-1 NWC) has slipped, losing each of its last three matches.

Men’s golf

Western men’s golf captured its 11th GNAC title following a two-day tournament at Coeur d’Alene Resort April 22–23, led by junior Ryan Ho’s two-round score of 6-under-par 207.

Ho finished third overall and posted a GNAC Championships record 9-under-par 62 in the first round of play. He contributed to Western’s three-round team score of 14-under-par 838. The next closest team was Simon Fraser with a 6-under-par 846.

Sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr finished fourth overall (5-under-par 208) and junior Seth King tied for sixth (3-under-par 210).

Western now receives the GNAC’s automatic bid to the 20-team NCAA Division II West/South Central Super Regional at University Golf Course in Las Cruces, New Mexico, May 9–11.

Women’s golf

The Vikings’ women’s golf team closed out its season with a second-place finish at the GNAC Championships, held on the same days and location as the men’s tournament.

Sophomore Emma Worgum led Western with her two-round score of even-par 144, and the Vikings finished 34-over-par 610 as a team.

Western had five players finish top-10 out of the 25-player field.
